Journey to the aisle: The Proposal

Journey to the aisle: The Proposal

CM1_8721It’s taken me longer than I anticipated to be able to write this post. I think it is because I am not used to sharing the much about myself on any platform so it’s a little bit hard for me! Alas I finally was able to calm my nerves and put pen to paper or in this case fingers to keyboard. I got proposed to on January 18th 2015. I don’t know if I can really say it was one of the happiest days of my life because I have experienced so much happiness since then but it was one of those days that whenever I remember a smile creeps up on my face. My engagement was weird. I already knew I was getting married on August 16th 2015. I had already booked my hall and secured Jide Alakija as my wedding photographer (priorities). Getting this ring was more of a formality than anything. I was already planning my wedding and had even gone to the Toronto wedding show the week before.  My husband and I always said I had a ” ring of the heart” when people asked why we where planning a wedding without a ring. lol

The picture I used to announce to friends and family i was engaged. LOL!

Sometime in November of 2014 we had gone to the mall to pick up a few things and like most couples who know they are getting married soon, we wondered into a Jewellery store and i tried on a few rings. The store had a certain collection that I totally loved and they had different price points for their rings. I liked a few of them asked them a whole bunch of questions and we left the store that day,  Fast forward to January 16th(Friday). My boyfriend picks me up from work and we head to the mall. I knew he was going to buy the ring but he didn’t want me to know. So he gave me some lame story of having to use the washroom and that I should go get us food because we where going to church from there.  It was weird because that is normally something we do together but he insisted we do it separately. He actually went  to the “washroom” and then came back when he realized he gave me the bank card he was supposed to use to pay for my ring. LOL! He made some excuse again and went off again. he got the ring, went to the car hid it then came back to meet me inside the mall and we ate quickly and went to church. Saturday we spent the day mostly at home watching movies and such and then he said he had to call my parents and formally ask my dad to marry me. This was so funny because technically he had done that on December 1st 2014 but I guess now that is was real he decided to call them again. He talked to them for a while and when I got to curious he left the living room and went inside the room to continue the conversation.

At Lunch after church on the day we got engaged

Next day. Sunday January 18th, We woke up to get ready for church and for some reason he was so excited. He woke up before me to do his daily devotional and pray and by the time we started talking he was so excited. I was wondering what was making him so happy. He would come and ask me randomly while I was getting ready so you really want to marry me right? I’m like um uhhh we already crossed that bridge. I figured he was going to propose to me that week. We finished getting ready and he went to the car before me, I joined him some minutes later but then he said he forgot something in the house so he went back in.  He then called me to come inside that I forgot my jacket. I was like just bring it for me. He was like no come and get it. Thats how I went back inside the house all flustered because i didn’t really need my coat. I went in looking for the jacket and I turn around and he was on his knees. I just started laughing.  He was talking and I was just laughing and saying what are you doing!! I don’t know what he said.  I finally heard will you marry me and I said “of course” I didn’t say yes, I didn’t scream and cry. I just said of course. He put the ring on my finger and the rest as they say is history.

I loved my proposal. fuss free, no cameras, no people, just us. making a commitment to spend forever together. I liked it a lot. I called my parents on our way to church and sent a message to my siblings and close friends. No one was allowed to instagram/ Facebook/BBM. I am really private when it comes to things like this so it was private for a while till I felt comfortable to share with my larger circle. It was a very interesting day. By the end of the service in church a lot of people knew we had gotten engaged and all the congratulations messages and hugs I was dreading actually happened. LOL! we ended the day by having lunch  at one of our favourite restaurants. When I got back to my house, I finally brought out my wedding planning journal that I bought a few months before and started planning my dream wedding. 😀

  1. Awwww Ohita, this is really sweet! Congrats! I look forward to reading more. And kudos for planning your own wedding.
Unlike you, I didn’t know when my boyfriend bought my ring, didn’t know he’s been planning my proposal with his sister and my friend for months. No one knew except him and those two until the day of proposal. I was so shocked and of course, happy.
    Thanks for sharing your story.
